"The Overcoat" is a short story by Nikolai Gogol, published in 1842. The main character, Akaky Akakievich Bashmachkin, a modest official, lives in St. Petersburg and suffers from poverty and obscurity.life changes when he decides to buy a new overcoat because the old one is worn out.
 
After much saving, Akaki buys the desired overcoat, and thisthe event brings him joy and confidence. However, soon after the purchase, his overcoat is stolen, and Akakiy turns to the authorities for help, but no one listens to him. This leads him to deep depression and illness. In the end, he dies.
 
The story ends with a mysterious episode: the ghost of Akaki begins to take revenge on people who did not help him, stealing their overcoats. "The Overcoat" is a striking example of Gogol's social satire, raising the themes of poverty, human dignity and the indifference of society.
